James (Jim) Irwin Smith


Jim passed peacefully at the age of 87 in Thornbury on Wednesday, January 23, 2019. Lovingly remembered by his wife Bonnie and two daughters - Janine and Sheena. Jim was predeceased by first wife Jane and daughter Michele. Proud stepfather to Branch and Jay. Adored by grandchildren Kyra, Kelsie, Ali, Grace, Carly, Sofie, Skye and Avery and great grandchildren Aaliyah and Kash. Born to Agnes and James Smith of Glasgow, Scotland, Jim is also survived by brother Donald and sister Jean. Most of Jim’s career was spent in journalism where he worked for numerous Canadian newspapers, magazines and radio stations. He ended his career as Co-ordinator of the Journalism program at Humber College in Toronto. Upon retiring to Wasaga Beach, Jim was an active member of the Friends of Nancy Island, Wasaga Community Theatre, Wasaga Men’s Probus Club and the Masons of Stayner. Jim was happiest with Bonnie by his side, on his sailboat or in front of a typewriter writing the next great Canadian novel. Friends will be received at the Caruthers & Davidson Funeral Home – Wasaga Beach Chapel, 509 River Road West on Friday, January 25, 2019 from 5 to 8 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 1pm at Wasaga Beach Community Presbyterian Church, 208 Mosley Street, Wasaga Beach.
