Obituary for David Samuel Thompson

David Samuel Thompson
Thompson; David Samuel ‎
Passed away peacefully in his sleep on the evening of Tuesday September 27, 2016 with Grace always by his side. Born May 29, 1931 in Ottawa. Beloved son of Samuel and Lena Thompson. Survived by sisters Mary Froggett and Sheelah Sims of Ottawa. David was blessed with two loves in his 85 years. Predeceased by his first wife, Jean Iris McQuarrie (September 7, 2000) with whom he shared 43 years of great marriage. David and Iris were wed in Ottawa March 16, 1957 and started their family in the Montreal area, eventually settling in Kitchener-Waterloo. They were most proud of their children John (Irene), Julia (Leo), and Peter (Sherry). Grandchildren Brittany (Tyler), Rebecca (Jared), Lindsay (Kuinton), Jennifer, Christopher, Liam, Joel, Sebastian, Chastene (Jeff), Paisley and Mallory. David had 7 great-grandchildren with one more on the way. Fate smiled upon David again when he married Grace Gimpel on June 25th, 2004. These two took great pride in their combined families and loved each others children as though they were their own. David added to his family Jeff Gimpel (Pam), Rod Gimpel (Kim) and Sandy Lister (Brent), and their children Julia, Lisa, Grant, Lindsay, Alex and Curtis. He was also blessed with sisters-in-law Shirley, Joy, and brothers-in-law Joe and Frank. He loved this large family dearly and that love was returned in kind. Many trips kept these two busy including a wonderful cruise to Greece and several winters in Florida. They made long lasting friendships wherever they went. Their extended family includes their faith community at Wasaga Beach United Church. Many an evening’s entertainment included Grace and David regaling the crowd with humorous skits that involved some very outlandish costumes. This loving church added life to their years that is hard to match. They also were members of the Probus Clubs and always stayed connected with current events. Words to describe this man are many, but include, artist, musician, golfer extraordinaire, salesman’s salesman, orator, raconteur, family man, athlete, armchair quarterback, animal lover, Cameron Highlander. David maintained a positive outlook throughout his life. His physical strength was always obvious. When illness took hold this past spring, his strengths of spirit and character sustained and never left him. David will be fondly remembered by his large extended family including nieces, nephews and friends far and wide. Many thanks to the palliative care team led by Dr. Alyssa Boyd, nurses of St. Elizabeth and the caring staff at Campbell House Hospice in Collingwood. Special "thank you" to nurse Nancy. Friends will be received at the Carruthers & Davidson Funeral Home, 509 River Road West, Wasaga Beach on Sunday October 2, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.. Memorial Service will be held at Wasaga Beach United Church, 380 Zoo Park Road, Wasaga Beach on Monday October 3, 2016 at 2 p.m.. If desired, donations in David’s memory may be made to Wasaga Beach United Church or Campbell House Hospice.
